For one in three Dutch adults who cycle or walk daily, additional exercise isn't necessary. The Health Council recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity per week for optimal health. Commuting by bike to work or walking to the station often hits this target without gym sessions.

The Knowledge Institute for Mobility Policy analyzed data from the Netherlands Mobility Panel, where 5,300 participants tracked their trips and reported on health.
Those with a healthy BMI biked more and drove less than overweight individuals. Car-dependent people average just five minutes of activity daily, with only 7% meeting guidelines. Cyclists, however, achieve the Health Council's recommendation 80% of the time.
