One in Five Children Isn't Exercising Enough: The Parental Influence and Path Forward

Many parents unintentionally set a poor example when it comes to physical activity.

Not Leading by Example
Forty percent of parents don't view themselves as athletic or highly active. Children notice this too—63 percent believe their parents exercise too little.

The Perceived Cost Barrier
Just over half of children get at least an hour of exercise daily. Yet many aren't in organized sports. Parents cite high costs (28 percent), preference for other activities (33 percent), or the child's reluctance to exercise more (27 percent) as reasons.

A Clear Demand
Among kids not in sports clubs, 34 percent want to join—one, with 42 percent of girls expressing interest.

Free Sports Trials Available
While some sports can be pricey, staying active doesn't have to be. On Sunday, November 9, kids can enjoy a free sports event at Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, featuring demonstrations and hands-on activities. Learn more at www.anderespelen.nl.
