Beginning spring 2017, Tampax will list the full composition of its tampons directly on the packaging. After two years of mounting consumer pressure, the brand has committed to greater transparency. Scientific studies have identified trace amounts of potentially toxic residues in tampons, which may contribute to toxic shock syndrome (TSS)—a rare but serious menstrual-related condition that can be life-threatening.
Tampax's earlier opacity on product ingredients sparked widespread frustration, exemplified by Mélanie Dorflinger's 2015 Change.org petition calling for clear labeling on intimate care products. Her campaign amassed nearly 259,000 signatures, proving highly effective. In response, Tampax added limited composition details inside boxes in 2016. This spring, the company promises even more comprehensive information on outer packaging. This progress merits recognition, though Dorflinger urges verification that listings match the detail of cosmetics.
