Unlike most supermarket products, Tampax tampons—and many similar items—lack ingredient lists on their packaging. This oversight prompted 19-year-old student Mélanie to launch an online petition on Change.org in July, seeking clarity on these intimate hygiene products and urging the company to act.
On the petition page, Mélanie shares her frustration: "No matter how much I checked Tampax packaging at home or in stores, I found no composition details." Her concerns were heightened by reports of a young American woman who suffered a leg amputation due to toxic shock syndrome (TSS) linked to a Kotex tampon. According to Metronews, certain ingredients may foster Staphylococcus aureus growth in the vagina, leading to bloodstream infection and sepsis. Amid such stories and warnings, reassurance feels elusive.
Mélanie argues that companies deliberately obscure product compositions, despite the direct health implications for users. She pressed Tampax's communication team but received only a dismissive response: insufficient packaging space. Undeterred, she vows to escalate: "Next step: the Ministry of Health!"
The petition has garnered over 39,700 signatures toward a 50,000 goal and earned backing from 60 Millions de Consommateurs magazine. Stay tuned for updates.
