Lead by Example: How Parents Boost Kids' Activity Levels, Backed by Research

Want to get your kids moving more? The most effective approach is to increase your own exercise and lead by example.

Research
Studies have long shown a link between parents' and children's physical activity. New findings reveal that when parents step up their exercise, kids follow. In a study of 83 families with children aged 7-14, participants were encouraged to add 2,000 extra steps daily.

Results That Inspire
When mothers hit the 2,000-step goal, their children averaged 2,117 extra steps. Even if mothers fell short, kids still added 1,175 steps on average. The least active children at the start saw the greatest gains—a promising sign. Fathers showed similar influence. Set the example, and watch your family thrive!

Practical Tips

  • Bike or walk your children to school instead of driving.
  • Plan active family weekends like mountain biking or hiking in the woods.
  • Play Wii games together for fun and movement.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Enjoy badminton or frisbee as a family.
