Every year, hundreds of everyday consumer products face recalls due to safety concerns. In 2019, the specialized site Oulah! identified over 1,000 defective items posing risks to health, personal safety, or the environment. A single manufacturing flaw, contaminated ingredient, or component failure can lead to serious consequences. This affects clothing, toys, hygiene products, and food. Thankfully, 60 Million Consumers magazine regularly highlights products to avoid.
Early 2021 saw numerous recalls for health dangers. Sesame products top the list, with hummus, breadsticks, cookies, and more withdrawn due to ethylene oxide contamination in sesame. The European Commission deems this a "serious risk to human health." Food isn't alone—toys and leisure gear are implicated too. Recently, the consumer group flagged children's swings and scooters from various brands for fall and injury risks. Hygiene items also made the cut, including an organic children's shower gel and antibacterial hand cleanser.
