According to a comprehensive Omnibus study conducted by Qilibri in partnership with Opinion Way from June 26-28, 2020, involving 1,003 representative French women aged 18+, a striking 67% report body image complexes. This dissatisfaction peaks among women aged 35-44 (82%), those in lower socioeconomic groups (78%), mothers (74%), and younger women aged 18-24 (58%). Media plays a significant role in fueling these feelings, with 86% of women citing advertisements, 79% social networks, and 84% television as key aggravators.
French adults hold a modest view of their bodies, assigning an average score of 6.3/10 based on weight, figure, and appearance. Men rate themselves more favorably at 6.6/10, while women are stricter at 5.9/10. Younger men under 35 score highest at 7/10, whereas women over 35 average 5.8/10.
Women are disproportionately affected, with 38% reporting they don't feel good in their own skin. Over one in ten (11%) have undergone cosmetic surgery—8% once and 3% multiple times. Looking ahead, 12% are considering it, rising to 25% among 18-24-year-olds.
Weight remains a top concern, with 53% of respondents feeling overweight. To improve body confidence and shed pounds, most plan to adopt a more varied diet (90%) and exercise regularly (86%).
