The French recognize the heart as a vital organ and many believe they're taking proper care of it. However, a recent IFOP survey conducted for the French Federation of Cardiology uncovers a stark disconnect between perception and reality.
To assess knowledge of cardiovascular diseases and adherence to prevention advice, IFOP polled 2,000 adults. The findings highlight key areas needing attention. While 61% report regular physical activity, only 31% actually exercise for at least 30 minutes, two or three times a week (note: 20 minutes of running weekly doesn't qualify as regular).
Dietary habits fare no better. Despite widespread awareness of guidelines like eating five fruits and vegetables daily and limiting salt, just 40% consume at least one fruit per day and 38% one vegetable. Moreover, 64% add salt to meals at the table, with 24% doing so systematically. Yet, 77% consider their diet balanced.
Another concern: only 22% cite quitting smoking as a key prevention strategy against cardiovascular disease. Smoking accounts for 25% of such deaths in those under 70 and most myocardial infarctions in under-50s.
The French Federation of Cardiology urges greater action: increase physical activity and improve nutrition to meaningfully lower these underappreciated risks. Simple steps with profound impact!
