Could Cats Worsen Severe PMS? Study Explores Toxoplasma Gondii Link to PMDD

As cat lovers know, our feline friends provide invaluable comfort—especially during tough times like premenstrual syndrome (PMS), when headaches, stress, and even depression can strike. Yet a preliminary study from the University of Juarez in Durango State, Mexico, suggests cats might not always be the ideal companions for women with severe PMS symptoms. Researchers point to Toxoplasma gondii, a common parasite transmitted by cats, as a potential trigger for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a more intense form of PMS.

Nothing to Be Alarmed About

The study analyzed blood samples from 151 women diagnosed with PMDD, finding that 10 tested positive for Toxoplasma gondii. Notably, infected participants were nine times more likely to report feeling “overwhelmed” or “out of control” in the lead-up to their periods compared to uninfected women.

That said, the researchers emphasize this is early evidence only—the study has limitations and requires larger-scale follow-up to confirm any causal link. No need to rethink your bond with your cat just yet.
