Researcher Pinpoints Inner Ear Dysfunction as Potential Cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

While sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths have dropped dramatically—by 75% in under 15 years—nearly 250 infants still succumb annually, per 2009 Health Watch Institute data.

For decades, the unexplained deaths of seemingly healthy babies have puzzled experts. After 11 years of dedicated research, Dr. Daniel Rubens, a Seattle-based physician, proposes a breakthrough: an undiagnosed inner ear dysfunction. Published in the journal Pediatrics, his theory suggests this impairs the baby's ability to reposition for better breathing, resulting in asphyxiation.

Dr. Rubens is now spearheading a larger study to validate these findings. 'I'm not giving up—we'll find a solution,' he affirms. If confirmed, widespread screening could prevent future tragedies.
