SoundCity: Inria's Free App Mapping Urban Noise Pollution for Healthier Cities

Urban living often exposes us to relentless noise that harms our hearing and well-being. Inria researchers have developed SoundCity, a free software tool that maps the noisiest locations hour by hour. Users can identify and avoid the most disruptive spots while contributing data collected via laptop microphones, which measure noise intensity in A-weighted decibels (dBA). User anonymity is fully protected and approved by France's CNIL (National Commission for Computing and Liberties).

In Paris, the regulatory daily average noise limit is 68 decibels (dB), yet 11% of residents are exposed to higher levels, as noted by Le Monde. Noise pollution contributes to around 10,000 premature deaths annually from heart attacks, strokes, and related issues. "Silence is golden" rings truer than ever.
