I Tried Ragefulness: Venting Anger at the Gym to Thumping Techno

Mindfulness has its merits, but unleashing pent-up emotions can be equally healthy—especially at the gym. I tested ragefulness firsthand: pounding out anger to rock-hard techno beats. Does it really relieve stress?

I'm not naturally expressive with anger. I skip yelling or cursing, opting for a 'Walt Disney' approach: voicing frustrations sweetly. It beats fist-slamming, which just shuts me down. Yet University of Colorado research shows venting occasionally—on your terms—is beneficial. Suppressed irritations shorten your fuse, sparking fiercer outbursts than intended. Proactively releasing them, like on a punching bag, prevents this without harm or guilt.

A gym brochure for a pop-up ragefulness class sparked my curiosity. Burn calories and frustrations for total zen afterward? I'm in!
