Does Myopia Surgery Hurt? Expert Insights on PRK, LASIK Pain, Recovery, and Risks

As an experienced ophthalmic surgeon, Dr. Rocher explains the procedure based on your myopia degree (in diopters):
1/ For –0.5 to –3 or –4 diopters, PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is used. The surgeon removes the eye's surface epithelium, then lasers the cornea to reshape it. Each eye takes 30 minutes.
2/ For –3 to –8 diopters, LASIK—the most common method—is preferred. A first laser creates a corneal flap, and a second corrects myopia. The flap stays in place, forming a micro-scar.
3/ Beyond –9 diopters, intraocular lens implants may be recommended.

Does it hurt? PRK causes discomfort for 2-3 days until the epithelium regrows—a bandage contact lens and painkillers help. LASIK is painless, but expect watering eyes for 3-4 hours, light sensitivity, and blurry vision for a few days. Key precautions: Don't drive home alone (it's unsafe) or use public transport (infection risk). Resume work the next day; makeup after a week.

What are the risks? Mild inflammation, quickly resolved with antibiotic drops. Among 100,000+ annual procedures, insurers report about 10 severe corneal inflammation cases with vision fluctuations.

How much does it cost? €850 for PRK; €1,200 per eye for LASIK. Not covered by social security, though some mutual insurers contribute.
