Lotte's Challenge: Hula Hooping a Full Kilometer While Running

Why not blend hula hooping with running? That's how my latest fitness challenge took shape. I set out to run a full kilometer while keeping a hula hoop spinning around my waist. Was it doable? Here's how it went.

As a longtime hooping enthusiast, I've loved it since schoolyard breaks with glittery hoops. Even now, I kick off mornings with upbeat music and a few minutes of hooping—fun, effective cardio without the intensity.

The Challenge

In my training sessions, I often incorporate hooping: hoop runs, squats, or obstacle courses. It works brilliantly. So why not level up by combining it with running? My goal: one kilometer of continuous hooping on the move.

Hooping & Running Prep

I mapped a safe route—a long, wide canal-side cycle path to avoid mishaps. With hoops in various weights at my disposal (from my coaching gear), I chose the lightest to spare my waist any bruises. A bit more practice, and I'd be set.

Practice Runs

Hoop ready, I cleared the living room and got spinning. Focusing on hooping first, I shuffled forward and back to music's rhythm. It held steady—until I knocked over a water glass! Lesson learned, but confidence grew. Hoop-running couldn't be much harder, right?

Ready, Set, Go!

The big day arrived. My sister joined as cyclist, distance tracker, and cheerleader—essential support for any athlete. We picked a starting pole, did a serious countdown, spun the hoop, and I was off to a strong start.

Too Light a Hoop

Past the initial trees, wind became my nemesis on the open path. The lightweight hoop wobbled with every gust, demanding wilder hip swings. A heavier one might've been smarter. Lactic acid built fast—note to self: train harder next time. Halfway felt eternal amid the effort.

A New Sport?

Passersby cheered (or stared), but I pressed on at a determined shuffle-hoop pace. Spotting my sister at the finish pole fueled a final 'hoop sprint'—awkward but victorious. I crossed it: one kilometer hooped!
