Yvonne's Zuiderzee Classic Triumph: Conquering 220km for Charity – Race Recap

Over the past few weeks, you've followed blogger Yvonne's preparations for the grueling 220km Zuiderzee Classic cycling event. Saturday was race day. Here's her firsthand account from the saddle.

Yvonne: Today was it—the grand finale. It felt that way, at least. Tackling something new is always thrilling, especially with the ladies by my side!

Out of the Nest
The alarm blared at 5:45 a.m., with Jacomina arriving at 6:00. I'd prepped everything the night before: bike checked, gear packed. Morning chill had me layering up—shorts and sleeveless would do once the sun warmed things.

Ready to Roll
We reached Almere Poort just before 7:00, linking up with the other women. While they unloaded bikes, we grabbed bib numbers. Brr—that cold wind! But clear skies promised a stunning day. Our 220km group was small. After inspiring words on our cause, Maag Lever Darm Foundation director Marjan Verasdonck waved us off. A short while in, we halted—wrong turn onto the 120km route! Extra miles, but we flipped around and restarted strong.

No End in Sight

Pacing ourselves for the long haul, we rotated pulls efficiently. Then came the Houtribdijk: water on both sides, endless horizon. Tough mentally—focus on the wheel ahead. Our group's champs powered through, getting us all across. Huge thanks!

Recharge
Next, the long Flevopolder stretch to the 178km stop at Nature Park Lelystad. Perfect spot for a currant bun, apple juice (wasp company included), bathroom break, and final bottle refill. Lovely weather now, tailwind helping—I'd already blanked the dike outbound.

And suddenly, Topsportcentrum Almere loomed: finish line! Ladies, epic teamwork—shoutout to fellow riders too. A beautiful day for a vital cause. Proud to have raised over €83,000 together!
