Researchers at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto have found that playing Wii games can significantly speed up recovery after a stroke.
In a study, clinicians engaged 11 patients whose arm muscle strength had weakened post-stroke in active Wii gameplay.
After just two weeks, these patients moved their arms more easily and faster than those in a control group who played cards or practiced with blocks, showing no gains in muscle strength. However, experts caution it's too early to routinely recommend Wii games after a stroke. "First, research needs to be done on larger numbers of patients," said study researcher Dr. Saposnik.
