Will Birth Control Pills Soon Be Available Over-the-Counter in Pharmacies?

We've all experienced it: forgetting your birth control pill in your handbag before heading out or leaving it on the table during vacation. Such oversights happen easily. Yet, hormonal contraceptives currently require a prescription from a doctor, gynecologist, or midwife. With long wait times for gynecologist appointments and medical deserts in rural areas, immediate access remains a challenge. Leading health professionals are now advocating for simpler access to reliable contraception for all women.

Directly Available in Pharmacies

How? By allowing pharmacies to dispense the pill without a prescription. On Tuesday, April 18, 2017, the #Libérezmapilule collective launched a petition on Change.org, calling on authorities to authorize over-the-counter sales of contraceptive pills.

A Simple Questionnaire

This would involve progestin-only pills, containing just one hormone in low doses. Contraindications can be quickly assessed through a straightforward questionnaire. Women seeking the pill at a pharmacy would answer pharmacist-led questions to identify any risks. Notably, pill prescriptions—whether initial or renewal—do not require STI screenings or tests for cervical or breast cancer. Risks remain consistent regardless of who issues it.

Twitter reactions poured in quickly post-petition. Many eagerly support the change…

Even France's Minister of Families, Children, and Women's Rights, Laurence Rossignol, endorsed the #Libérezmapilule initiative via tweet.

Others express caution…

Despite varied opinions, Caroline Rebhi, co-president of Family Planning, affirms: "With a progestogen pill, whose side effects are limited, there are few risks to women's health." Several countries already implement this model—Portugal, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Turkey, and Russia—with reassuring studies backing safety. Could France be next?
