Alcohol Delivers More Daily Calories Than Soda, Euromonitor Study Reveals

Alcohol is notorious for liver damage, yet its role in weight gain often flies under the radar. A comprehensive Euromonitor study across 24 countries shows daily calories from alcoholic drinks exceed those from sodas in 23 nations—a startling insight into hidden calorie sources.

Alcoholic Beverages Are High in Calories

The findings are unequivocal: in 23 of 24 countries, alcohol contributes more beverage calories than sugary sodas. South Korea leads with 168 kcal daily from alcohol versus just 44 kcal from soda. France ranks eighth overall. Only Taiwan favors sodas for calories.

This evidence bolsters calls for moderation in France, where alcohol not only adds empty calories but also spurs appetite and overeating—counterproductive for weight management. Beyond calories, alcohol poses well-documented health risks. Sodas aren't innocent either, packed with sugar. Water remains the best alternative for health-conscious hydration.
