Eating Fruit During Pregnancy Linked to Higher Baby IQ: Key Study Findings

To ensure a healthy baby, expectant mothers must prioritize nutrition, vigilance, and a balanced diet. While this is intuitive, emerging research reveals that maternal diet influences fetal brain development even before birth. Canadian scientists have identified a direct link between fruit consumption during pregnancy and enhanced infant intelligence.

A Study with Remarkable Results

Between 2008 and 2012, researchers tracked 3,600 pregnant women who consumed varying amounts of fruit and/or 100% fruit juice—up to six or seven portions daily. One year postpartum, 688 qualifying children underwent tests assessing communication, health, social behavior, and more. The findings: higher maternal fruit intake correlated with elevated child IQ (up to 5 points higher). Even controlling for family income, maternal education, vitamin use, and breastfeeding, fruit stood out as the strongest factor for cognitive development, per Dr. Piush Mandhane, Professor of Pediatrics and lead study author.

Moderation matters, however. Fruit offers health benefits, but excess raises blood sugar, diabetes risk, and weight gain. Until larger studies confirm these results, follow guidelines like France's: 5 fruits and vegetables daily. Bon appétit!
