Mayo Clinic Study: Letting Your Dog Sleep in the Bedroom Improves Sleep Quality

Many dog owners debate whether to allow their pets in the bedroom at night. Traditional advice often emphasizes respecting personal space, especially sleeping areas. However, a recent Mayo Clinic study suggests that inviting your dog into the bedroom can enhance sleep quality. Researchers in Phoenix, Arizona, monitored 40 healthy adults and their dogs over five months. Participants used devices to track nighttime activity and sleep patterns for seven consecutive nights. The findings? Sharing the room with your dog—regardless of breed—leads to better rest.

Nearby, But Not on the Bed

There's a key caveat: benefits apply only if the dog stays in a nearby crate or at the foot of the bed, not under the covers. Snuggling can disrupt sleep due to pets' nighttime movements. Study author Dr. Lois Krahn attributes the positives to feelings of comfort and security. "Many owners are separated from their dogs during the day and cherish closeness at night," she told Metro. "Most assume pets disturb sleep, but our data shows otherwise—human-animal bonds have evolved, allowing restful nights together." In short: bedroom access yes, bed-sharing no.
