During Mobility Week, SNCF collaborated with Withings, the French health tech startup, on a comprehensive study. Over 8,000 Île-de-France residents participated in the "Online Walks" challenge, tracking their daily steps via a mobile app.
Île-de-France stands out as France's most active region, with just 20% of residents classified as sedentary (under 4,000 steps per day), compared to the national average of 25%.
Cyclists lead the pack, averaging 8,600 steps daily.
Public transport users log about 900 more steps per day than drivers. Opting for stairs over escalators adds over 1,200 steps.
Inner Paris residents walk roughly 1,000 more steps daily than those in the suburbs.
While Paris ranks second in Europe for walking—behind only London—residents still fall short of the recommended 10,000 steps. SNCF aims to enhance its infrastructure to encourage healthier habits, as stated by Transilien Director Alain Krakovitch: "We want to promote walking among our users. Especially since the more you walk, the more you want to walk."
