Perineum Sunning: The Controversial Wellness Trend Gaining Traction Online

Sunning the perineum

Instagram influencer Metaphysical Meagan went viral after sharing a photo of herself in a happy baby yoga pose, naked on a rock, exposing her perineum to the sun. She promoted a simple idea popular across the Atlantic: “Expose your anus for 30 seconds in the sun equals a full day spent in the sun with your clothes on.” This practice, known as “sunning the perineum,” is said to originate from Taoism, a Chinese philosophy emphasizing harmony between humans and nature.

“It's a great alternative to drinking coffee”

Defending her morning ritual, Meagan claims: “It’s really more energizing than cups of coffee. It's a great alternative to drinking neurotoxic coffee and caffeine that can disrupt your adrenal gland health.” She adds: “No sunscreen is necessary—all you really need is 30 seconds of sun exposure. The ideal times are between 7am and 9am.”

“No scientific evidence”

Proponents say perineum sunning regulates hormonal cycles, improves sleep, and boosts libido. However, these benefits lack medical confirmation. Stéphanie Ooi, a specialist at London’s MyHealthCare clinic, told Business Insider: “There is no scientific evidence that sunbathing in this way has any effect on physical well-being.”
