Hands-On Review: Colgate Connect M1 Smart Manual Toothbrush

The Promise

Launched at the end of 2018, the Colgate Connect M1 is a manual toothbrush with smart connectivity. Powered by a single battery, it pairs seamlessly with the Colgate Connect app to track your brushing habits and technique, helping you clean more effectively using your own arm strength.

Our Hands-On Test

Right out of the box, the toothbrush feels remarkably light, even with the included battery. Its non-slip handle provides a comfortable, secure grip. The brush head stands out with bristles of varying heights arranged in a unique pattern—lining the edges and forming three central circles—designed, per the app, to remove stains effectively. Best of all, replacement heads are available.

Pairing is straightforward: insert the battery, download the app, select 'connect toothbrush,' shake the handle (it lights up at the base), and choose the brush code for automatic connection.

For brushing, start with Test Mode to let the app analyze your technique and map coverage. It scores cleanliness by area using a clear color code: whiter zones are well-cleaned, while yellowish ones need more attention. The session ends naturally when you stop.

Afterward, switch to Coach or Coach+ mode. Coach mimics a game like Just Dance, guiding you to follow on-screen movements (with previews queued up top). Coach+ offers real-time 3D feedback: brush where the virtual brush points, or progress halts until positioned correctly.

You can brush freely without the app; if powered on (base lights up), it logs data for later sync—no phone needed every time. Kids get a fun pirate game where thorough brushing advances the ship left or right by collecting gold.

One minor nitpick: the tongue-cleaning nubs on the back go unused by the app.

The Verdict

The Colgate Connect M1 stands out for revolutionizing manual brushing with app-guided precision—unlike pricier electric smart brushes. Its battery lasts up to 6 months, minimizing hassle. At €24.95, it includes two toothpaste tubes (whitening or fresh); optional €9.95 quarterly kits deliver heads and paste, or buy à la carte.

This beats electric competitors (often €100+, with costlier heads) while delivering on its promises. Electric brush users might miss the automation and feel manual is less thorough at first—purely a habit adjustment.
