Dermal Abyss: Color-Changing Tattoos for Real-Time Health Monitoring

Imagine tattoos that do more than decorate—they monitor your health. Researchers from MIT and Harvard Medical School have pioneered this with Dermal Abyss, a smart ink developed since 2017. It changes color based on skin sugar, salt, or pH levels, offering diabetics a needle-free way to track blood glucose before and after meals.

From Blue to Brown

Powered by biosensors, the ink responds to blood composition. High carbohydrates shift it from blue to brown; excess salt turns standard green to glowing green; elevated skin pH morphs pink to purple. Currently tested on pig skin with promising results, it's not yet available commercially. Further studies are needed to confirm safety.

While this innovation redefines tattoos' potential, the researchers emphasize it's no substitute for precise medical tests.
