Why Period Symptoms Worsen in Winter: Insights from Dr. Daniel Preethi

If periods already feel challenging (and let's be honest, they're rarely enjoyable), you might notice they hit harder in winter. You're not imagining it—symptoms like intense chocolate cravings (thanks, hormones), low mood, and bloating intensify this season. The culprit? Lack of sunlight, according to Dr. Daniel Preethi, director of The Doctors Clinic in London, as shared on Metro UK.

Eating More and Moving Less: The Perfect Storm

"Shorter days impact mood, and combined with hormonal shifts during periods, everything feels amplified," Dr. Preethi explains. Reduced sunlight means lower vitamin D levels, which normally boosts dopamine—the feel-good hormone. Plus, we tend to stay indoors more, exercise less, and eat more, exacerbating premenstrual symptoms. Studies show active women experience milder effects than sedentary ones. Winter also lengthens cycles by an average of 0.9 days, delaying ovulation and potentially complicating conception. Dr. Preethi recommends staying warm and maintaining regular exercise to support hormonal balance.
