Back pain strikes people of all ages and genders—whether it's lumbago, a nagging ache, or sciatica. In France, it's the second most common reason for visiting a general practitioner, and one in five sick leaves stems from it. Dubbed the "malady of the century," it often brings intense pain and fear of recurrence. Yet, 7 out of 10 people believe rest is the solution for temporary or recurrent back pain. That's a myth: as France's Health Insurance (Ameli) confirms, movement is the most effective treatment. They're backing this with a nationwide awareness campaign and a free app.
The "Back Pain? Good Treatment is Movement" campaign launched on November 17 and runs through December 8 across TV, online platforms, and billboards (renewed annually for three years). Facing back pain? Start by consulting your doctor, then visit the dedicated Ameli website resource or download the free Activ'Dos app from the Play Store or App Store. It provides targeted exercises, videos on proper postures, and quizzes to test your knowledge. Above all, avoid staying still—inactivity weakens the muscles supporting your spine, trapping you in a vicious cycle: less movement causes pain, and pain leads to even less activity, worsening low back pain. Instead, opt for stairs over elevators, walk whenever possible, cycle, swim, or tend to your garden. These simple steps make a real difference.
