Brain Processes and Remembers Sounds During Sleep, CNRS Study Reveals

Review lessons or learn Russian while sleeping? Researchers from CNRS and Hôtel-Dieu explored the brain's capabilities during sleep, finding it doesn't shut down completely. It can recognize sounds played while asleep—hinting at potential for sleep-based learning.

Sleep Enhances Learning

The experiment was straightforward: sleeping participants heard looping “white” noises (random overlapping auditory frequencies) overnight. Researchers then tested reactions to familiar and new sounds. Results showed the brain recognized repeated noises, proving it's active during sleep and retains that information upon waking. This suggests the brain processes—and potentially learns from—stimuli while we rest.

Yet, deep sleep is essential for clearing clutter and consolidating memories. Complex tasks like memorizing sentences or words during sleep remain nearly impossible, per the experts.

That said, “impossible is not French.” Watch for future breakthroughs.
