Managing Heartburn and GERD: Proven Symptoms, Relief, and Long-Term Strategies

Symptoms

A third of the French population experiences gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): a burning sensation in the chest that rises to the throat, often with an acid taste. The issue stems from the esophageal sphincter—the muscle between the stomach and esophagus—failing to function as a natural anti-reflux valve.

If It’s Temporary…

Our office testing highlights Rennie sticks (Rennieliquo, €6.50) for neutralizing gastric acidity directly in the stomach. For frequent heartburn, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like Mopral Pro (€11) block acid production in stomach wall cells. A meal often provides quick relief. During flare-ups, a gentle massage with Puressentiel Stomachache (15 essential oils, €14) helps, as stress plays a key role. Gastroenterologists recommend hypnosis or yoga. For nighttime reflux, elevate your bed head by 15 cm.

And When It Persists?

Consult a doctor promptly, and adopt lifestyle changes: cut tobacco, caffeine, and alcohol; avoid irritants like cabbage, chard, and celeriac, plus heavy vegetable or fatty meals while keeping a balanced diet. Reflux may signal a Helicobacter pylori ulcer, treated with antibiotics plus a PPI.
