Survey: 2 in 5 Millennial Women Forget Birth Control Pill Monthly Due to Stress and Busy Lives

A survey by Opinion Health and Bayer highlights a common issue among millennial women: forgetting the birth control pill ranks as the second most frequent lapse, just after skipping makeup removal before bed. The study surveyed 500 women aged 21-29 (born in the 1980s-1990s), a group prone to these oversights amid major life transitions, with stress playing a key role.

39%—nearly two in five—reported forgetting their contraception at least once in the month before the survey. Over the past year, 80% had missed at least one dose. The top reason, cited by 40%, was overly busy schedules, followed by inconsistent dosing routines and, for 32%, inadequate storage visibility.

Life Transitions Drive Forgetfulness

These lapses often stem from shifts in daily rhythms between the twenties and thirties. As gynecologist Dr. Sylvain Mimoun explains: “Stress can cause memory lapses and forgetfulness in daily tasks. While most forgotten activities among millennials have minor impact, missing the pill can significantly disrupt lives and future plans.” Over three-quarters of French participants viewed these lifestyle changes as stress-inducing sources of worry.

55% felt more prone to forgetting when anxious. Common triggers included starting a new job or training (48%) and moving (45%). Many have explored alternative contraception methods that don't require daily adherence.
