Once you get the hang of it, wearing contact lenses feels effortless. However, maintaining strict hygiene is non-negotiable for eye safety. Too often, convenience leads wearers to skip essential rules—like sleeping in lenses, swimming with them, or using improper cleaners—which can jeopardize eye health and, in severe cases, even cause blindness.
A recent CDC study, reported by the Daily Mail, highlights widespread non-compliance with hygiene protocols. Improper use or cleaning can lead to vision loss from corneal inflammation like keratitis or waterborne microorganisms.
Beyond the risks, the study of 1,000 users shows most wearers don't follow basic guidelines: Over half sleep in their lenses, eight in ten shower with them, six in ten swim while wearing them, and 17% rinse cases with tap water.
To address these findings, the CDC reinforces key hygiene recommendations:
– Always wash hands with soap and dry thoroughly before handling lenses.
– Remove lenses before showering, swimming, or sleeping.
– Rinse lenses with an antiseptic solution after removal.
– Clean the lens case with disinfectant solution.
