Study Proves: Budget Supermarket Foods Match National Brands Nutritionally

Do you skip first-price products at the supermarket, assuming they're inferior? Think again. A comprehensive study by the Food Observatory (OQALI) shows that entry-level and hard-discount private-label items deliver nutritional quality on par with national brands.

Over three years, researchers analyzed more than 16,000 products, including dairy, charcuterie, and compotes. The verdict: only minor, non-generalizable differences. 'Whether it's sugar, fat, or salt content, we found no significant or systematic gaps across brand types,' explained Céline Ménard, the report's lead author, on France Info.

The sole notable exception? Bacon from first-price lines has higher fat and lower protein than premium options.
