Sauna Sessions: Nearly as Heart-Healthy as Exercise, Major Finnish Study Shows

Could you swap an occasional gym workout for a sauna session? A landmark study in JAMA Internal Medicine reveals that regular sauna use delivers cardiovascular benefits comparable to exercise.

Researchers analyzed 2,315 Finns—champions of sauna culture—over 20 years. Of these, 190 died from sudden cardiac death, 281 from coronary heart disease, 407 from other cardiovascular causes, and 929 from various other reasons.

Adjusting for factors like age, smoking, BMI, and physical activity, the findings were striking: more frequent sauna visits linked to sharply lower heart risks. In essence, saunas support robust heart health.

Up to 90 Minutes for Peak Benefits

Those visiting 2-3 times weekly had 23% lower odds of cardiovascular events; 4-7 times weekly slashed risks by 48% (and 40% for other mortality causes).

Why? Heat elevates blood pressure and heart rate, induces sweating to flush toxins, strengthens cardiac muscle, and promotes deep relaxation.

Maximize gains with longer stays—from 2 minutes to 90 minutes—per the researchers.
