Optimal Time for Women to Quit Smoking: Timing It with Your Menstrual Cycle

Is there an ideal window to quit smoking? A preliminary study from the University of Montreal suggests yes—for women, the luteal phase, just before and during menstruation, may offer the best opportunity.

This small-scale research involved 34 smokers (19 women and 15 men) who weren't planning to quit. Participants first standardized their nicotine intake by smoking a cigarette every 30 to 40 minutes.

Researchers then used brain imaging while showing cigarette-related images and asking questions. Afterward, subjects rated their cravings on a 0-100 scale.

The Influence of Hormones

Findings revealed that women in the mid-follicular phase (from menstruation to ovulation) showed heightened brain activity linked to stronger cravings, unlike those in the luteal phase (ovulation to cycle end). Self-reported craving scores aligned with these brain responses.

This ties into hormonal shifts: the luteal phase features elevated estrogen and progesterone, which influence mood and urges.

The researchers conclude that syncing quit attempts with the menstrual cycle could boost success rates. Larger studies are planned to confirm this.
