Are Electronic Cigarettes Harmless? Expert Insights on Vaping Safety

What Is an E-Cigarette?

In an e-cigarette, a resistor heats a flavored liquid to mimic the draw and sensation of a traditional cigarette. Key advantages: it's far cheaper (less than €2 for the equivalent of a pack) and avoids tobacco's harms, producing only water vapor with no tar.

What's in the E-Liquid?

Composition varies by brand, including propylene glycol, glycerol, and flavors like tobacco, fruits, or mint. Nicotine levels differ widely. Most devices come from China, with unclear plastics and often inaccurate nicotine dosing.

What Are the Risks?

Long-term effects are unknown. Heated flavorings and nicotine addiction potential haven't been fully studied. No serious incidents reported yet (just minor bronchial reactions), but nothing is proven safe over time.

Is It a Viable Tobacco Alternative?

For heavy smokers, it's better than real cigarettes. No evidence supports quitting via vaping. Never start if you don't smoke—risk of new addiction, especially with nicotine.
