E-Cigarette Flavors Under Scrutiny: UK Study Reveals Toxicity Risks in Popular Varieties

Dangerous or harmless? Electronic cigarettes spark endless debate. A new study from the University of Salford in the UK adds critical insight. Published in the journal Scientific Progress, it reveals that certain e-liquid flavors pose significant health risks.

Serious Implications for Regular Vapers

Researchers analyzed 20 e-liquid refills across nine flavors: Cherry, Strawberry, Ice Mint, Menthol, Tobacco, Blueberry, Vanilla, Bubblegum, and Caramel. All were purchased from stores or online. Lab tests showed varying toxicity levels, with fruity flavors least harmful and menthol, chewing gum, caramel, and tobacco most dangerous. "Cells can recover after 48 hours, but not after 72 hours or more, which has serious consequences for regular users," explained Dr. Patricia Ragazzon, who led the study.

The flavors also proved toxic to embryonic cells. "E-liquid compositions vary widely—some natural, others synthetic or simple compounds—making it challenging to assess risks across the market," Dr. Ragazzon noted. Ultimately, the surest way to avoid tobacco's harms is to quit smoking altogether.
