In the kitchen, bouillon cubes are indispensable for adding depth to pasta water, rice, legumes, and vegetable dishes. Once you start using them, they're hard to give up. However, many are overly salty. Last year, 60 Millions de Consommateurs magazine tested over 20 products, evaluating salt content and additives like flavor enhancers, colorings, and thickeners to rank the best and worst poultry and veal stocks.
High salt levels are the main culprit. Of the chicken broths tested, 9 out of 11 scored below average, with salt ranging from 0.43g to 1.63g per 150ml serving.
The lowest scorer is Lidl's Kania chicken broth at 7.5/20, due to excessive salt, additives, allergens, and palm oil. Close behind at 9/20 are Auchan's poultry broth and Dilecta brand broth, both high in salt, additives, and allergens. Even popular Knorr chicken broth falls short at 9.5/20 for the same reasons: too much salt, additives, and allergens.
