Frequent yoga practitioners risk hip injuries, warns Benoy Matthews, a specialist in hip and knee physiotherapy and member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists. He sees a growing number of yoga instructors seeking treatment for hip issues.

Matthews explains that hips become overloaded when forced repeatedly into poses beyond the body's natural range of motion. In severe cases, this can lead to the need for hip surgery.
"People often confuse stiffness with pain," he notes. "A pinching or blocking feeling in the groin signals potential hip problems—don't ignore it." Yoga itself isn't the issue; Matthews recommends alternating it with other sports to lower injury risk.
