Exercise Boosts Happiness: The Ideal Amount and Risks of Overdoing It

Regular exercise is a proven mood booster, but like many good things, moderation is essential for reaping the full benefits.

How much is enough, and when does it become too much?
A landmark study in The Lancet Psychiatry found that exercising for about 45 minutes, three to five days a week, delivers the greatest mental health improvements. Activities like aerobics, cycling, and team sports offer particularly strong benefits, while gentler pursuits such as walking, gardening, and household cleaning also enhance happiness.

Interestingly, the research highlights a downside to excess: individuals exercising more than 23 times per month or sessions exceeding 90 minutes reported poorer mental health outcomes.
