Why So Many Want to Lose Those Extra 3 Kilos – Expert Insights

Many aspire to drop a few pounds, but few follow through. What's really at play here?

66% of Dutch adults want to lose weight – TNS NIPO.

Remarkably, even women satisfied with their bodies often aim to shed three kilos. Health psychologist Liselotte Visser explains in Santé (May 2016) the key reasons behind this common desire:

  1. Those three kilos align with social norms. Admitting you're happy with your body can seem boastful in a culture pushing constant self-improvement. By targeting a few kilos, you fit in – avoiding arrogance or outsider status. Women often feel this subtle pressure unconsciously, using tight jeans as an outlet for broader frustrations, yet it's rarely worth sacrificing that glass of wine.
  2. Losing three kilos feels manageable. No major diet overhaul needed – just cut back on wine and snacks temporarily, right? As Visser notes, for most, it's not compelling enough for real effort, so the weight stays put.
  3. It's a mental safeguard. You still fit your current clothes, but those extra kilos warn against creeping up a size – a big psychological hurdle. Acknowledging them prevents further gain without panic.
