In 2017, 6,424 people in France received an HIV diagnosis. Since July 1, 2019, free HIV testing has been offered in Paris and the Alpes-Maritimes at participating medical analysis laboratories. The process is straightforward: simply visit a lab, present your Carte Vitale or social security number (anonymous options and support for those without coverage are available on-site). A quick blood test provides results, and if positive, a medical biologist will schedule a hospital appointment of your choice within 48 hours. Effective treatments today halt HIV progression, enabling those infected—from all walks of life, not just stereotypes like gay men or drug users—to thrive. Early detection maximizes chances for a normal, healthy life.
Paris and the Alpes-Maritimes launched free HIV screening to achieve zero new infections by 2030, making testing accessible to everyone. Previously, tests cost around €20, and those with multiple partners are advised to screen regularly. Free anonymous testing remains available nationwide at CeGIDD centers, though lab visits offer greater convenience.
The initiative runs until June 30, 2020, with hopes for extension and nationwide rollout.
