Standing at Work Could Help You Lose 2.5 kg a Year, Mayo Clinic Study Finds

We all know prolonged sitting—whether at a desk or elsewhere—is bad for health. Sedentary lifestyles increase risks of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and even certain cancers as circulation slows and organs function less efficiently. A comprehensive Mayo Clinic analysis changes the game: standing during work hours could help you shed 2.5 kg annually.

Avoidable Weight Gain

Drawing from nearly 46 studies, researchers found standing burns an average of 0.15 more calories per minute than sitting (with men expending slightly more energy than women). Over a typical 6-hour workday, this adds up: around 2.5 kg lost—or at least not gained—in a year, without altering diet or exercise. Standing engages more muscles, boosting overall energy expenditure.

Not everyone can switch to standing full-time, but small changes help: take frequent breaks to stand and walk (like fetching water), opt for stairs over elevators, and avoid lounging immediately after work. Adjustable "standing desks" are widely available—discuss options with your employer.
