Researchers from the Canadian Centre for Science and Education conducted a revealing experiment to assess bacterial transfer from blowing out birthday candles. A teacher and students simulated a cake using polystyrene covered in aluminum foil, topped with icing and candles. To mimic a real party, participants ate pizza beforehand. The results were striking: frosting on blown-out candles harbored 14 to 120 times more bacteria than untouched samples. A sobering reminder of shared germs!
Blowing out candles is a cherished tradition—we make wishes and celebrate—but it does share oral bacteria with guests. Fortunately, the bacteria in healthy mouths are largely harmless. The study's lead researcher emphasized that even a cake blown on 100,000 times poses no illness risk. That said, if the birthday celebrant is ill, skip the cake to avoid flu or stomach bugs—and ideally, they should refrain from blowing too. Otherwise, enjoy your slice worry-free!
