A medical breakthrough in the UK: Two infants, aged 11 and 16 months, achieved complete remission from acute leukemia using immunotherapy—a technique never before tested on such young patients. This approach involves harvesting white blood cells from a donor and infusing them into the patient. Leukemia, a aggressive blood cancer, stems from the uncontrolled proliferation of white blood cells in the bone marrow, severely compromising the immune system.
Alongside standard chemotherapy, physicians administered immunotherapy to enhance the babies' natural defenses. The results were remarkable—within just 15 days, the donor cells eradicated all detectable cancer cells. Three months later, bone marrow transplants restored their immune systems and cleared the donor cells. Today, both girls are thriving in excellent health. While still in clinical trials, experts are optimistic about scaling this therapy for broader use.
