Why Medicines Aren't Always Cheaper Online: Insights from a Comprehensive 2016 Survey

A landmark survey by the Rural Families association compared prices for over-the-counter medicines across 80 pharmacies—39 physical stores and 41 online sites—in its 2016 Observatory of Medicine Prices. The results reveal key challenges: prices are often poorly displayed, vary dramatically, and online deals frequently disappear once shipping is factored in.

Prices that vary enormously

The analysis covered 15 products: 12 drugs and 3 non-drug items. Nurofen prices ranged from €2 to €4.50 (a 2.25-fold variation). Nicopass, a smoking cessation aid, went from €14.99 to €31.30 (2.09 times). Activir showed the biggest spread, from €3.20 to €8.90 (2.78 times). While online prices tend to undercut physical pharmacies, average shipping fees of €5.91 (€3 minimum, €10 maximum) usually wipe out the savings.

Prices hard to find

Nearly 80% of medicine packages lacked price tags, and only 39% of pharmacists issued receipts—making comparisons across pharmacies, websites, or supermarkets tough. Since 2009, pharmacists have provided support services like health screenings, blood pressure checks, and treatment adjustments, yet a poll of 700 families found most unaware of these offerings.

The report's clear advice: Always ask for prices upfront and compare before buying. Sound guidance from trusted experts.
