Drawing, painting, crafting… A recent U.S. study reveals that engaging in artistic creativity can significantly reduce cortisol levels—the primary stress hormone. The higher cortisol, the greater the stress. Researchers measured levels in 39 adults aged 18-59 before and after 45 minutes of art-making. Results: 75% experienced a drop in cortisol, signaling lower stress. In the remaining 25%, levels rose slightly. Art therapy expert Dr. Girija Kamal explains, "This could stem from the excitement sparked by the activity, not added stress."
Key fact: Cortisol is vital for daily function, peaking in the morning for energy. Ongoing studies will examine additional stress markers. In the meantime, reach for your pencils, brushes, or scissors!
