Inflating balloons by mouth is a cherished party ritual that delights kids and adults alike, demanding lung power and delivering instant fun. Yet, Tests-Achats, Belgium's trusted consumer protection authority, strongly advises switching to a simple balloon pump to avoid serious health risks.
Balloons may contain nitrosamines, potentially carcinogenic chemicals. European rules ban them from baby pacifiers but allow up to 1 mg/kg in balloons.
In rigorous tests on 16 balloon products from local stores, Tests-Achats simulated saliva exposure. Four exceeded the EU limit by 0.05 mg/kg, and five others by 1 mg/kg. Only 12 of 16 packages warned about using a pump. The group calls on manufacturers to label every package clearly.
For safer birthdays and parties ahead, grab a pump—save your breath for workouts and keep celebrations healthy!
