New Study: Women More Sensitive to Cannabis Side Effects Due to Estrogen

Women appear more vulnerable to cannabis's adverse effects, including depression, anxiety, and paranoia, according to a study published in the Journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence. Researchers link this sensitivity to estrogen levels, which heighten the impact of THC, the plant's key psychoactive compound.

Modern cannabis contains higher THC concentrations, increasing risks like panic attacks, confusion, and hallucinations—particularly for women. Previous studies show women are more prone to dependency and substance use disorders.

Withdrawal symptoms in women often include irritability, sleep disturbances, and reduced appetite, which can escalate to serious issues. They also face higher relapse rates after quitting.

THC's appetite-boosting effects are notably stronger in men.

Cannabis impairs fertility equally in both sexes. Proceed with caution to protect health.
