Prolonged Sitting Accelerates Aging: Study Links 10+ Hours Daily to 8 Years of Cellular Aging

Health experts recommend 10,000 steps daily for optimal well-being. Yet sedentary habits prevail for many. Science now confirms the risks: sitting too long speeds up biological aging.

Researchers from the University of California, publishing in the American Journal of Epidemiology, analyzed data from nearly 1,500 women aged 64-95. Their findings? Women sedentary for over 10 hours a day aged faster at the cellular level.

Key Insights from the Study on 1,500 Women Aged 64-95

Participants completed questionnaires and wore accelerometers for seven days to track activity. Results showed women with less than 40 minutes of daily physical activity and more than 10 hours sedentary had shorter telomeres—the protective DNA caps at chromosome ends that mark biological age. Consequently, their cells were biologically eight years older than those of active women.

The message is clear: reduce sitting time and stay active to protect your cellular health and slow aging.
