Yoga is booming worldwide. In this guest blog, yoga expert Djina shares her insights from years of global exploration.
About Djina
Hi, I'm Djina. For years, I've traveled the world visiting top yoga destinations. I'm now in Bali's Ubud, Indonesia's yoga mecca, home to countless schools and teachers—a true paradise for practitioners. As a passionate yogi who loves yoga and yoga pants, I started strech.nl at my friend's suggestion. It's a fun blog with a serious look at the yoga industry's growing commercialization.
My Journey with Yoga
I've been practicing yoga for over a decade, and it's transformed my life. It might sound clichéd, but it's real: I look better, eat healthier, and feel happier. Before yoga, I walked the dunes five times a week and stayed fit, but yoga sculpted my waist into the hourglass figure I desired. It curbs my snack cravings, reduces my alcohol intake, and promotes mindful eating. Yoga helps me tune into my body and practice self-compassion. Beyond my mat time, I've researched the industry deeply, compiling the infographic below packed with fascinating facts.
The Surge in Popularity
Yoga is more popular than ever, one of the world's fastest-growing industries—and the top-growing sport in the Netherlands, with over 800 schools. Once associated with stereotypes, it now draws 300 million practitioners globally, including over 380,000 in the Netherlands. It's embraced by all ages, especially educated women with strong incomes.
The infographic reveals more surprises: over 50 yoga styles exist. In the West, Hatha yoga dominates, blending hundreds of postures with breathwork. Bikram (hot) yoga, practiced at 40°C, is another hit—George Clooney is a fan. Less favorably, founder Bikram Choudhury has faced scandals. Celebrities undeniably boost its appeal.
Yoga's rise stems from its proven benefits: alleviating stress, sleep issues, health problems, while improving posture and flexibility. Today, it's not just spiritual or physical—it's a full lifestyle culture with heavy commercialization. In the US, yogis spend over $500 annually on gear, clothes, and wellness. Premium yoga pants? Easily $100. Will the Netherlands follow suit? This infographic shows yoga as globalization's standout success.
