Do You Need a License to Drive a Quad? Key Rules for Light and Heavy Models

Planning an exciting quad ride with family or friends? These versatile machines offer thrilling adventures, but licensing rules apply depending on the type—much like with jet skis, not every quad requires a permit.

Do you need a car or motorcycle license for a quad? Which one exactly? As experts in vehicle regulations, we'll break it down clearly based on official guidelines.

License Requirements by Quad Type

Quads homologated for public roads (mandatory registration since 2005) fall into two categories: light quads and heavy quads.

A light quadricycle has an engine of 50 cm³ or less (4 kW for electric or diesel) and tops out at 45 km/h. No driving license is required. However, if born on or after January 1, 1988, you must be at least 14 years old and hold a BSR/AM (Brevet de Sécurité Routière category AM) with the "quadricycle" or "moped" option.

A heavy quadricycle exceeds 50 cm³, goes over 45 km/h, and is capped at 15 kW (20 horsepower). A valid driving license is mandatory.

Which License Do You Need for a Heavy Quad?

For heavy quads, ensure you have the right credentials:

  • Before January 19, 2013: A, A1, A2, A3, B, or B1 permits
  • After January 19, 2013: B or B1 permit

To carry a passenger, the quad must feature two distinct seats, such as a double saddle or bench.
